M’sian Woman Claims Trishaw Rider Demanded RM80 For Ride In Melaka

The rider had previously agreed to charge only RM50.
Trishaws are one of the most recognisable sights in Malaysia as this humble mode of transportation is wildly popular among tourists who want to soak in the scenery leisurely.

Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a memorable ride for the family quickly soured after a woman alleged that the trishaw rider demanded higher payment despite the agreed upon figure.

Went from RM50 to RM80

According to a Threads post, the woman said she, her husband, and child had taken a trishaw ride in Melaka recently.

At the end of the ride, the trishaw rider demanded to be paid RM80, which took the OP by surprise as the trishaw rider had already agreed on charging only RM50 beforehand.

“When I asked the rider whether it was because the ride was long that led to an increase in fare, he didn’t answer me at all.

“Although my husband managed to negotiate the fare to RM60, I’m still upset as I’m paying an amount that was different from what was agreed upon earlier,” she wrote.

Authorities respond

The post soon caught widespread online attention, including that of Melaka Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Exco Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, who urged the OP to drop him a DM so that he could probe the matter.

Meanwhile, Melaka mayor Datuk Shadan Othman told Oriental Daily that the city council views the allegation seriously and will launch an investigation, which will take up to three weeks.

He added that the usual fares for trishaw rides range between RM25 and RM50.

‘If members of the public or visitors feel they’ve been cheated, they can scan the QR code on the trishaw and lodge a report with the city council.

“If we find that licensing conditions have been violated, the trishaw rider involved will face strict action, including their licence being revoked,” he said.
