A woman has accused a cafe in KL of profiteering after she was allegedly charged a higher price for tiramisu when the price display was a different figure.
The incident has since seen a fierce back and forth between the cafe and the woman, eventually culminating in a complaint being filed with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN).
Price showed RM20, but got charged RM25
In the now-viral Threads post, the woman wrote that she went to the cafe to buy a slice of tiramisu, where the price display was RM20.
But to her shock, she was informed by staff that the actual price was RM25. When she questioned the discrepancy, the staff said the RM20 price tag was the old pricing.

When the woman protested, the staff apologised, took down the display price tag, and handed over the tiramisu.
In the end, she still got charged RM25 despite the initial display price of RM20, which left her feeling deceived.
Maybe for some people it’s not a big deal as it’s only RM5. But you need to understand there are customers who have a limited budget and can only afford the displayed price.

“It’s not about the RM5, it’s about being transparent with your customers,” she added.
War of words
What transpired next was a tense exchange of words between the woman and the cafe that was adamant on clearing its name.
In its reply to the post, the cafe acknowledged that it had erred in not updating the price tag but stressed that its tiramisu pricing was revised to RM25 since Feb 3 due to increased raw material costs.
It also added that after being notified of the mistake, staff explained to the woman on the spot regarding the discrepancy and changed the price display tag in front of her, all of which was captured on CCTV.

The woman then thanked the cafe for clarifying but questioned how the cafe could have allowed the RM20 pricing to remain for so long.
She also pointed out that she only realised the price difference after making payment and disputed the cafe’s claim that she had agreed to paying RM25 beforehand.
The cafe then replied by saying the situation was an “isolated incident” but promised to conduct an internal investigation.
Escalation
Unfortunately, the cafe’s defensive stance and attempt to clear itself of wrongdoing led to widespread backlash from netizens, who slammed it for refusing to humble up and apologise.

Things took a turn for the worse following a screenshot shared by the woman, where the cafe’s head pastry chef messaged her to arrange a meeting so that she could clear her name, much to the woman’s annoyance.

Sensing that the cafe wasn’t sincere in rectifying the issue, the woman went to lodge a formal complaint with KPDN.
WeirdKaya reached out to the cafe for comment on the matter but didn’t receive a reply at the time of writing.
