A Malaysian wedding guest has sparked backlash online after complaining about the door gift she received at a friend’s wedding.
In a Threads post, user @adira_azmat shared a photo showing a pink paper bag containing what appeared to be packaged bread and a drink.
‘Is this really the door gift?’
According to her post, the wedding was held at a hotel, which apparently led her to expect something more elaborate from the couple.
Went to my friend’s wedding. The ceremony was held at a hotel, but is this really the door gift? Bread and a drink?” she wrote.
She added that the couple could have given guests something “a little more grand”, before comparing the simple gift to one typically given at a less affluent wedding.
The post quickly gained attention, recording more than 824,000 views at the time of the screenshot.
Netizens weren’t impressed
Instead of agreeing with the guest, many netizens criticised her for appearing ungrateful.
One commenter pointed out that she had been invited to a wedding, enjoyed a meal at a hotel and was still given something to take home.
“A door gift is a gesture, not a measure of the couple’s wealth,” the commenter wrote, adding that guests could simply buy something else themselves if the gift did not meet their expectations.
Another netizen reminded her that attending an invitation and receiving a door gift were two separate matters, saying that hosts were not obligated to provide guests with expensive wedding favours.
Others were especially unhappy with her comment comparing the gift to one from a “poor person’s wedding”.
One user wrote that guests should not be calculating how much a couple spent on their wedding or judging the value of the door gifts they received.
“You came as a guest, not as the wedding’s financial auditor,” the commenter wrote, joking that anyone expecting something extremely luxurious could give out iPhones at their own wedding instead.
