M’sian Uni Students Say They’re Tired Of Assignments & Being Treated Like They’re In High School

"We’re speaking up because we hear other students' concerns."
University life is often painted as a time of growth and self-discovery, but for many Gen Z students, it’s more of a stress painting.

The transition from high school to higher education comes with a mountain of new responsibilities, and recent discussions reveal that today’s students might be hitting the books a bit too hard.

A recent viral post by a user on X (@Rusydi_RL) has thrown this issue into the spotlight. The post features a picture of an anonymous letter from a university student, detailing the severe stress caused by an excessive workload and a schedule that’s tighter than a packed sardine can. The letter even hints at a potential breaking point:

“A message to the lecturers: Don’t you understand that we are stressed? We might look calm in front of you, but we are struggling. One bad day could push someone to take their own life because of this stress. Do you want to live with that guilt?

We’re speaking up because we hear other students’ concerns. There’s so much coursework, so many assignments, tests, and presentations. You ask us to write reports like we’re fools, but we are not fools. Six subjects but 10 coursework assignments? Do you think that’s fair?”

‘Don’t treat us like we are high school students’

The letter also criticises the packed schedule, which forces students to hit the books even during Eid celebrations, and the lecturers’ teaching methods, claiming they are treated like high school students rather than adults prepping for the workforce.

“Do you think only you need time with your family? Every year, we have to celebrate Eid during study week. And another thing, don’t teach us like we are high school students. We need to learn skills for the working world, not just how to pass exams. With so much coursework, when are we supposed to revise?”

One user commented, “Weak! We used to join sports, participate in clubs, rush to the prayer room for events just to get college coupons. We stayed up late to finish assignments, took some leisure time on weekends, went to the mall or jogging, and continued assignments at night.”

Another wrote, “That’s only stressed from studying. Try entering the working world and see how stressful that is.”

A third chimed in,“If you don’t want tests and assignments, why are you still studying? Did you go to university just to relax and have fun?”
