Every car owner knows that a vehicle’s performance hinges on its engine and gearbox.
These components are the beating heart of your ride, and any issues with them can turn smooth journeys into frustrating experiences.
But while we often focus on regular servicing, how much attention do we give to the type of fuel we use?
That’s where automotive influencer Gu Lee steps in with a fresh perspective.
In a recent TikTok video, Gu Lee shared an eye-opening tip for car owners: loyal users of RON95 should occasionally switch to RON97 to keep their engines in tip-top shape.
Mix It Up: Why RON97 Matters
So, why does Gu Lee recommend this switch? The answer lies in how different fuel types impact engine health.
Gu Lee highlighted that while RON95 is widely used for its affordability, its lower octane content may not always
“You can’t just use RON95 all the time; you need to use RON97 occasionally to take care of the car’s engine pistons,” he explained in his video caption.
He pointed out that while RON95 is budget-friendly, its lower octane content compared to RON97 may not always meet your engine’s needs.
“RON95 is economical because it’s cheap, but it has less octane content,” Gu Lee said.
The Science Behind Octane
This naturally leads us to the science of octane—a term often seen at the pump but not always fully understood.
Gu Lee explained that octane plays a crucial role in reducing engine knocking, a phenomenon where fuel doesn’t burn evenly, leading to vibrations and potential damage.
Higher-octane fuels like RON97 ensure smoother combustion by reducing friction on the engine’s pistons.
“Octane in petrol reduces friction on the pistons, which helps the fuel burn evenly,” Gu Lee said, emphasising how this can protect the engine and enhance its performance.
With this in mind, Gu Lee’s suggestion to occasionally fill up with RON97 starts to make perfect sense.
While RON95 remains a practical and economical choice for daily use, adding RON97 to the mix could be a game-changer for your car’s health.
Switching up your fuel isn’t just about spending more—it’s about making smarter choices to prevent costly repairs and ensure a smoother ride.
The next time you’re at the pump, consider giving your engine the care it deserves with a dose of RON97. Your car—and your driving experience—will thank you for it.
