A woman recently shared her emotional experience after accidentally reading WhatsApp messages between her husband and father-in-law discussing car payments.
According to mStar, the woman’s husband has been struggling to keep up with monthly installments exceeding RM1,000 for a Honda HR-V that is currently being used by his parents.
Father-in-Law’s surprising request
With finances becoming increasingly tight, he expressed his intention to sell the HR-V and replace it with a more affordable car such as a Perodua Bezza.
What shocked the woman most was her father-in-law’s response. Instead of understanding the financial burden, he suggested that if the HR-V was successfully sold, the family should consider buying a Proton X50 instead.

“My husband already told him he doesn’t know how to find the money to pay for everything. But my father-in-law replied that if the HR-V can be sold, then just get the X50. He even said someone can help pay RM500 first, then he will top up the rest,” she shared in her post.
Financial strain on the family
The woman revealed that she and her husband only use a Perodua Myvi for their own transport and are raising a two-month-old baby.
On top of that, her husband’s brother is also supporting their parents by covering the monthly rent for their home.
The financial strain has left the couple feeling trapped, especially as they try to prioritize their own young family while managing expectations from their in-laws.
Reactions from netizens
The story quickly gained attention online, with many netizens sympathizing with the couple’s situation.
“So the husband is paying, meaning the car loan is under his name? Tell them the loan didn’t get approved for the X50. Such big demands, but the son ends up suffering from the burden.”

“The husband is the one paying for the parents’ car, and now the parents are requesting an X50. Why not just request an Audi while they’re at it? Then they tell the kids to come home wearing just underwear, later people will ask why. Easier to just say everything’s been pawned to pay the monthly X50 payment for you parents. Soon, I might as well pawn my underwear too for anyone who wants it. Just leave the fur behind.”
