M’sian Buys Myvi With Cash, Gets Looked Down By Mum & Compared To Brother’s Vellfire That Had 9-Year Loan

“Myvi only? Should be like your brother!"
Not everyone dreams of owning a luxury car. For some, the true comfort lies in living debt-free without the burden of hefty monthly installments.

That was the case for a Malaysian woman who proudly bought a Perodua Myvi with cash — only to have her purchase belittled and compared to her brother’s reconditioned Toyota Vellfire, which was bought with a nine-year bank loan.

“Myvi only? Should be like your brother”

According to mStar, the woman shared her story on social media, recalling how her own mother brushed off her decision.

I bought a Myvi with cash. My brother bought a reconditioned Vellfire on a 9-year loan. But my mother said, ‘Myvi only? You should be like your brother who bought a Vellfire. It’s bigger, more impressive.’”

She added that while she and her husband were truly grateful to afford a car without being tied down by loans, her mother’s words left them both disheartened.

Even my husband felt hurt. It’s as if my mother-in-law looked down on us. I just need some encouragement.”

Choosing silence out of respect

Despite feeling wounded, the woman said she chose to remain silent out of respect for her mother, recalling advice from her ustazah (religious teacher).

In my heart I thought, ‘Cash, mom.’ But who am I to say that? My heart hurt a little. Still, my ustazah said, when it comes to mothers, as long as you can endure, just endure. As long as you can swallow, swallow.”
