M’sian Stops Monthly UNHCR Donation Amid Rohingya Debate, Netizens Urge Him To Donate Locally

Netizens suggested MAKNA, IJN Foundation, stray animal NGOs and more after the man ended his UNHCR donation.
With the Rohingya issue becoming a hot topic online recently, one Malaysian man has gone viral after sharing that he decided to stop his monthly contribution to UNHCR.

In a Threads post that has since gained over 429,000 views, the man posted a photo of a UNHCR envelope addressed to him and said he had decided to terminate his monthly donation.

Since the Rohingya issue is currently being widely discussed, I decided to terminate my monthly contribution to UNHCR,” he wrote.

Netizens suggested other causes

His post quickly sparked a discussion, with many netizens suggesting that he redirect his donations to other causes instead.

One netizen suggested that he donate the money to feed stray cats and dogs, saying it would be a better option.

The man then replied by asking if anyone knew any trusted NGOs or organisations that help stray animals, adding that he usually keeps cat and dog food in his car.

According to the commenter, MAKNA had provided accommodation for a month, transport for radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and other assistance without charge.

The man responded positively, saying he would continue supporting the organisation.

Others suggested local foundations and direct aid

Besides MAKNA, several netizens also suggested other places and causes, including IJN Foundation, Zoo Negara, mosque donation boxes, zakat, and food aid for struggling students at public universities.

One commenter suggested IJN Foundation, saying it helps heart patients and families who cannot afford treatment.

Another netizen said donations could also go towards free food programmes at university campuses, as some students are struggling to afford meals.

There were also those who said they preferred giving directly to people in need, as they felt more certain that the money would reach the intended recipient.

Some raised concerns about donation transparency

While some supported the man’s decision, others questioned whether donations to large organisations truly reach the communities they are meant to help.

One netizen asked whether the money actually reached Rohingya refugees or went elsewhere.

The man replied that such doubts were part of the reason he decided to stop his contribution, but clarified that he is still continuing his donations to MAKNA and UNICEF.

He also shared that he has a soft spot for refugees and vulnerable communities, but said the recent discussion had made him rethink where his money should go.

Still wants to help, just through different channels

From his replies, the man appeared to be open to supporting other causes instead of stopping charity altogether.

He said he still intends to help, especially through organisations such as MAKNA, UNICEF, and possibly animal welfare groups.

The viral thread has since sparked a wider conversation among Malaysians about donation choices, transparency, and whether more people are now choosing to support local or direct causes.
