M’sian STEM Graduate Says They Applied For 548 Jobs But Still Gets Ghosted After Interviews

A strong degree, extra certifications and constant upskilling still did not guarantee a job.
Finding a job can already be emotionally draining, but repeatedly being ignored after attending interviews can make the process feel even more hopeless.

A job seeker recently took to Threads to share their frustration after applying for a staggering 548 jobs, despite having strengthened their résumé and picked up several new skills.

Résumé reviewed by multiple people

In the post, the job seeker addressed some of the common advice often given to unemployed graduates.

They explained that their résumé had already been reviewed by multiple people, suggesting that they had made an effort to ensure it was properly written and presented.

They had also participated in the K Youth Development Programme to gain additional experience and improve their employability.

The job seeker added that they were a STEM graduate and dismissed the idea that their degree was easy or lacked value.

I was a STEM graduate. My course is known for being hard.”

Continued upskilling while applying for jobs

Besides their university qualification, the job seeker said they had obtained Microsoft Azure certifications and were continuing to learn skills such as SQL and Power BI.

Despite these efforts, securing a job remained challenging.

While they managed to receive several interview opportunities, the communication would reportedly stop during the final stages of the recruitment process.

“I’ve got a few interviews, but in the end, all of them ghosted me. I am genuinely so tired.”

The post has since received hundreds of reactions, with many appearing to relate to the exhaustion of constantly applying for jobs without receiving proper feedback from employers.

Netizen suggests improving interview skills

Responding to the post, one netizen said the job seeker’s résumé was likely not the main problem, as it had already helped them secure interviews.

Instead, they suggested working on interview skills by sharing real life experiences and stories that could help interviewers better understand the candidate’s journey.

The netizen also recommended exploring networking and referrals, as these connections could sometimes make a significant difference in the hiring process.

They further advised the job seeker to focus on a specific career niche rather than applying too generally, while tailoring each résumé to the role being offered.
