In conjunction with Malaysia’s 64th Independence Day, many big brands are offering creative campaigns to celebrate this occasion.
One of them was McDonald’s, which recently announced that it would be giving away free McChicken burgers at all Drive-Thrus nationwide.
But here’s the catch: you have to chant “Merdeka” three times while waving a Jalur Gemilang to claim the burger.
Going beyond the hype
Since the launch, social media has been flooded with entertaining photos and videos of netizens shouting “Merdeka” to get their free McChicken.
One netizen, however, decided to take a whole new different route.
In a now-viral video, Sam Wong made his way to a McDonald’s outlet and shouted “Merdeka” three times.
Once he received the free McChicken coupon, he then proceeded to the counter to redeem the burger and bought drinks as well.
In a surprising twist, Sam approached a shirtless man sitting on the streets and gave him the burger and drink instead.
He then bought another McChicken and gave it to another homeless man sleeping on the floor.
Towards the end of the video, Sam called upon Malaysians to be kind to the needy.
They may not worry about what to eat tonight, but what about tomorrow, the day after, next week and next month?
The heartwarming video has since racked up more than 16,000 reactions on Facebook.
