M’sian Shocked By RM50 Bill After Buying Bread, Butter, & Milk At Convenience Store

Anyone been through the same too?
Living within one’s means is becoming harder and harder with each passing day as Malaysians are struggling with a weakening Ringgit, inflation, and stagnant wages.

A Malaysian recently took to social media to express his astonishment over being charged RM50 for groceries he bought at a convenience store, which has since sparked a debate among netizens over whether his rant was justified or not.

Based on the photo, he had bought a loaf of bread, a block of butter, and two bottles of milk.

In the caption, the OP wrote that he wondered whether those often claimed Malaysia had a lower cost of living had ever considered that it had a correlation to “a lower standard of living & quality of life”.

Prices of goods in Malaysia is absurd, blame the high inflation, weakening currency and high dependency on imports. Whereas minimum wage stays the same or barely increase much.”

The OP then ended by writing that perhaps the only thing Malaysians could be thankful for is the free healthcare the government offers, adding that he “cried” upon seeing the RM50 bill.

Divided opinions

In the comment section, netizens were split over whether the OP’s complaint was valid and compared the RM50 bill to prices in the UK and Europe.

Some felt the OP had no right to complain as he had bought the products from brands that were considered to be “expensive” and of “high quality”.

Another argued that the groceries shown in the photo weren’t the typical Malaysian diet, adding that one must be prepared to pay if they wanted to “live with a Western diet in an Eastern country”.
