Long-distance relationships are already hard enough, but for one Malaysian man, his relationship also had to overcome family objections, cultural differences, and concerns over religious conflict.
Recently, a Malaysian woman shared on Threads the heartwarming story of her younger brother’s four-year online relationship with his Thai girlfriend, and how both families gradually went from disapproving the relationship to fully embracing it.
Families strongly opposed relationship at first
According to the sister, both sides of the family were initially against the couple being together.
Apart from being from different countries, the couple also came from different religious backgrounds, which made things even more complicated for both families.
However, she said her brother was extremely serious about the relationship and remained committed despite the challenges.
He was really a pure love warrior,” she joked in her post.
Secret trip to Thailand after 2 years together
After dating for two years online, her brother allegedly decided to secretly fly to Thailand by himself to meet his girlfriend’s parents for the first time.
The sister said she helped cover for him during the trip, even though she was secretly worried about his safety.
Looking back now, she joked that imagining him suddenly disappearing into the “Golden Triangle” would have given her a heart attack.
Dad eventually changed his mind
By the third year of the relationship, the woman said her father began noticing how sincere and serious her brother truly was about his girlfriend.
As a result, the entire Malaysian family eventually flew to Thailand together to meet her family in person.
According to the sister, the Thai family left a very positive impression on them.
She described them as extremely polite, thoughtful, and welcoming throughout the trip. They even prepared many gifts and helped arrange transport and travel plans for the family during their stay.
The experience reportedly softened her father’s stance so much that he eventually encouraged her brother to start saving money to marry her.
Family initially thought it was a scam
Speaking to WeirdKaya, the woman revealed that her family was extremely skeptical about the relationship in the beginning and even suspected it could be a scam.
At first, whenever my younger brother brought up the relationship, nobody in the family even wanted to talk about it because they thought it was a scam,” she said.
According to her, that was also one of the reasons why her father insisted on meeting the girlfriend’s family in person in Thailand, as he wanted to see what kind of people they were.
She also shared that although the family strongly disagreed with the relationship at first, she still quietly helped her brother behind the scenes.
This included helping him buy a SIM card, checking ETS train tickets to Hat Yai, and researching transportation options to make sure he could safely reach the girl’s hometown.

Thai family later visited KL
Now in the fourth year of their relationship, the girlfriend’s family reportedly flew to Kuala Lumpur to meet the Malaysian side of the family as well.
The sister shared that they once again brought “an unbelievable amount of gifts”, while the girlfriend personally picked presents for every family member.
She admitted that the thoughtful gestures made her heart “soften instantly”.
The woman ended her post by saying she has a strong feeling the couple may soon be heading towards marriage.
