M’sian Senior Employee Fumes Over Junior Getting Promoted Despite Not Knowing How to Reply Emails

Junior gets the title, but senior does the job.
When it comes to promotions, not everyone feels it’s based on merit.

A senior employee who had worked at her company for almost seven years recently took to social media to vent her frustration after being passed over for a promotion—one that was instead given to a colleague who had only been there for four years.

In her post, the woman shared how disheartening it felt to be sidelined, despite her long service and deeper understanding of the job.

What made it worse was that the newly promoted colleague—now a senior executive—still depended on her for guidance.

So now they’re basically the senior executive, and I’m still just an executive. But whenever there’s an issue, they come to me to make decisions.”

She added that even replying to basic client emails was something the junior still struggled with and regularly sought her help for.

Maternity leave held against her

According to Mstar, it was revealed that the main reason she was overlooked was due to her past attendance, which had dipped when she was pregnant with her first child two years ago.

She admitted she had taken multiple emergency leaves because her child frequently fell ill, but had since made significant efforts to improve her record.

It still hurts when your kid is sick and you have to work anyway—even during festive holidays, I worked. And then this happens.”

Same responsibilities, different pay

Despite not having the title or the salary, the employee claimed she was already performing many duties expected of a senior executive.

She also pointed out the large pay gap between executive and senior executive roles in her company, along with the additional allowances that came with the promotion.

At the company I work at now, yes, the difference in pay between a senior exec and a regular exec is huge—and they also get a lot more allowances.”

While the post didn’t aim to belittle the junior staff, the sentiment was clear—years of loyalty and hands-on experience were seemingly sidelined by technicalities, leaving the senior employee feeling undervalued.
