Do it yourself lah.

In the nostalgic corridors of a boarding school, where memories of friendship and camaraderie often linger, a few alumni recall a darker chapter.

The noodle request: How it all started

A former student shared his perspective on an event that has since polarised opinions. The incident occurred when a fifth former asked a fourth former to prepare instant noodles.

This seemingly innocuous request spiralled into an unexpected drama, involving a police patrol car arriving at the dormitory, much to the astonishment of its residents.

‘At the time of the incident, I was in form 5, it was late at night, suddenly a police patrol car came to the school. Thought it was an emergency, apparently because there is a complaint.

“A form 5 student asked a form 4 student to make instant noodles (for him). It just so happened that the form 4 boy’s father is a police officer, so he immediately called his father.

The narrator, a fifth former at the time, described the confusion and surprise when the police arrived late at night.

The call to the police was made by the fourth former, who happened to be the son of a police officer.

This response to what the alumni describes as a routine dormitory hierarchy—where fourth formers are seen as juniors—sparked controversy.

Alumni’s controversial stance: To toughen him up

The alumnus, reflecting on the incident, rationalised it as a rite of passage, a way for students to ‘toughen up’ in their transition from childhood to adulthood.

“I know that bullying is wrong, I don’t deny it at all, but to call a father who is a police officer just because of the instant noodle case is extreme,” he said.

“There are many ways to solve that incident, but not by calling dad. Living in a dormitory is the time for us to learn to be ‘tough'”, he further explained.

He expressed disbelief over the extreme reaction to a simple request, leading to the ostracisation and eventual transfer of the fourth former.

“Finally after the incident, the form 4 boy was ‘ostracised’ by one school and then had to change his place of study”, he added.

The fifth formers, on the other hand, faced minimal repercussions and continued their schooling in peace.

The backlash

The story, once shared, ignited a firestorm of comments on social media. Many netizens strongly disagreed with the alumnus’s viewpoint, seeing it as a clear case of oppression and unjust hierarchy.

They praised the fourth former for standing up for his rights and condemned the sense of entitlement displayed by the senior student.

Comments ranged from calls for self-reliance to criticisms of the bullying culture often normalised in educational settings.
