For many SPM leavers, stepping into the workforce marks an exciting yet challenging phase of life as they gain new experiences and earn their first paycheck.

However, not all stories go as planned, as seen in the case of a bakery owner who recently shared an ordeal involving an SPM graduate who quit just four days into the job, citing exhaustion from standing too long.

To make matters worse, the worker’s mother later confronted the employer, demanding payment for her child’s four days of work and threatening legal action if the salary wasn’t paid.

The bakery owner took to Threads to share about the situation, shedding light on what happened.

The job, which was offered on a two-month contract basis for a Raya production project, came with clear terms during the interview.

It was emphasised that employees would undergo a one-week probation period, during which no payment would be made if they decided to resign.

During the interview, the terms were clearly explained. We needed workers for just two months, and training someone with no prior experience wasn’t easy. So, the condition was that if anyone quit during the probation period, they wouldn’t receive any payment.”

Despite this, the employee quit unexpectedly on the fourth day, citing the work was too tiring and standing for long hours was unbearable.

The situation escalated when the worker’s mother reached out, accusing the bakery owner of withholding her child’s salary and demanding immediate payment.

She hadn’t even started production work yet. We were still in the briefing stage when the resignation happened. The complaint was that standing for too long was exhausting,” the bakery owner shared.

Alongside the post, screenshots of the conversation with the mother were uploaded, where the latter threatened legal action if the payment wasn’t made.

The bakery owner explained that the terms were clearly outlined during the interview, stating that payment was based on the completion of the project rather than a daily wage.

Since the project had not commenced and the worker had resigned midway, there was no salary to be paid.

However, the mother insisted that the terms should have been communicated directly to the parents instead of just the employee.

“I explained that as a business, our responsibility is to brief employees, not parents. Everything was already outlined in the agreement, which was supposed to be signed after the probation period. But the worker resigned before that could happen,” the bakery owner clarified.

The incident has become a valuable lesson for the business owner, who reflected on the challenges of hiring employees in the future.

This has taught me to be extra cautious, especially when the parents are involved in helping their child get the job. Situations like this can happen,” the post concluded.
