M’sian Pharmacist Reminds Women Not To Drink Matcha Too Often. Here’s Why

Love matcha? Your period might not. 🍵
A Malaysian pharmacist has issued a PSA for matcha lovers — especially women — to think twice before drinking it too often, as it might mess with your menstrual cycle.

In a TikTok video, pharmacist Syah (@syahfarmasi) explained that one possible reason for irregular periods in young women could be frequent matcha consumption.

While many drink matcha or other green tea drinks to boost energy or improve skin, Syah said overconsumption, particularly because of its high caffeine content which could disrupt hormone balance and cause menstrual irregularities.

One cup of matcha can contain around 70mg of caffeine. Excessive intake may interfere with female hormones, affect ovulation, and cause unstable periods,” he said.

Apart from affecting cycles, too much caffeine may also worsen PMS symptoms such as cramps, headaches, and mood swings.

Syah clarified that drinking matcha in moderation is fine, but advised those experiencing irregular periods to take a break from it for one to two months to monitor their body’s response.

Matcha isn’t just in drinks — it’s also in cakes, desserts, and ice cream, so caffeine intake can add up without you realising.
