M’sian Mocked By Friend For Opting For Master’s By Coursework, Gets Questioned Over Chances Of Being A Lecturer

She’s tired of the constant comparisons.
Pursuing a Master’s degree is already challenging enough, but one Malaysian claimed she also had to deal with a friend constantly looking down on her choice of study mode.

The woman shared that both she and her friend were pursuing Master’s degrees, although they had chosen different routes.

Her friend opted for research, while she chose coursework.

Friend allegedly said her Master’s was easier

As reported by mStar, the difference in their programmes became a regular topic whenever the two met.

She claimed that her friend would repeatedly suggest that a research based Master’s was more difficult than one done through coursework.

You don’t know how difficult research is. Your Master’s is basically at degree level. Your Master’s isn’t as difficult as mine,” she recalled her friend saying.

The woman said she could not understand why her friend constantly felt the need to compare their studies or prove that one route was more difficult than the other.

Questioned her chances of becoming a lecturer

The comparisons apparently did not stop there.

The woman claimed that her friend also questioned whether her qualification would be recognised if she wanted to pursue a career in academia.

“Your Master’s is coursework. Even in the education field, public or private universities probably won’t consider hiring you as a lecturer,” her friend allegedly told her.

The remark left the woman puzzled, especially as she said her coursework programme still involved completing a dissertation and academic research.

She questioned why a coursework based Master’s should be looked down upon simply because it follows a different structure.

Says both routes require effort

The woman added that regardless of whether someone chooses research or coursework, completing a Master’s degree still requires significant commitment, hard work and sacrifice.

She appeared particularly frustrated by her friend’s attitude, saying that having a higher academic qualification did not necessarily translate into having a more mature mindset.

She’s already doing a Master’s degree, but her way of thinking is still like that,” she wrote.
