In the hustle and bustle of the Lion City, Singapore, where the cost of living can be notoriously high, one Malaysian has managed to spend less than RM40 on frugal living.
Through his TikTok account, @jonlzx has shared a glimpse of his daily life on how much he spends in a day working in Singapore.
Johnathan’s budget living
In the caption, questioning whether spending 10 dollars is enough for a day working in Singapore, Jonathan Lim delves into how he managed to keep his daily expenses remarkably low, spending only RM34.80 a day.
In the video, the 27-year-old Malaysian starts his day with a simple peanut butter toast at home, which costs zero penny.
Later, for the lunch break, Jonathan spent around 3.60 SGD , which is around RM12.40, on a simple meal that had rice, chicken, and vegetables.
Before heading out for his evening jog after work, he purchased a bun that cost him SGD1.5 (RM5.15).
For dinner, he bought 2 roasted chicken drumsticks for only SGD 5 (RM17.20). It’s quite a deal considering the serving size, it appears to be more than enough for one person.
For transportation, he spends SGD 3 (RM10.30).
Calculating the money that he spends on food is just RM34.80, excluding the transportation fee.
In his short vlog, he said that, in general, he needs 10+ SGD a day, which is more than enough to spend on an average day in Singapore.
Jonathan also hopes that by sharing this video, people who plan to work in Singapore will be better prepared to figure out the cost of living there.
Netizens praise his way of living.
“You are so smart in figuring out the way to be reasonable with your spending abroad! I really admire this!!”
“Jiayou. We all started like this. The fruits of your labour will come. Continue to stay focused and do what your heart tells you to”
“Wow this is really cool to see how the little things in life we come to appreciate”
His RM34.80 daily budget might seem too good to be true, but with a little discipline and a commitment to frugality, you also live large on a shoestring budget, just like Jonathan.
