A wan tan mee vendor in Muar, Johor, is warning other vendors to be vigilant whenever they put their QR code on display for customers to make payment.
This comes after he lost RM83 in earnings to a dishonest customer who covered the stall’s QR code with his own and claimed he was merely “borrowing” the cash when confronted.
Stall’s QR code covered by customer’s
Based on CCTV footage, it showed the customer pasting his own QR code over the stall’s under the cover of darkness after making sure no one else was at the scene.

According to the timestamp, it took place at around 11.10pm last Friday (Nov 14).
Speaking to Sin Chew Daily, stall owner Chen Ruiheng (transliteration) said the customer was a regular and had patrionised his stall several times.
He added the act came to light at 10am the next day when his girlfriend noticed something was amiss about the QR code that was pasted on the fridge for customers to make payment.
‘I was just borrowing some money’
Chen then contacted the landlord to review the CCTV footage and eventually tracked down the customer after identifying his motorcycle plate number.
When confronted, the customer admitted to the act but claimed he was borrowing the RM83 and promised to return it within a few days.

“After I recovered RM83 from the customer, I uploaded the CCTV footage to social media to warn other business owners.
“Although I had censored the customer’s plate number, he called me and demanded that I remove the video,” he said.
Police report made
Chen added that initially he didn’t want to escalate the matter further but changed his mind and lodged a police report following the customer’s call.
“The stall accepts cash payments but we display two QR codes for customers. I usually don’t check whether customers have actually made payment as I trust them.

“If my girlfriend hadn’t noticed that something was wrong with the QR code, we might have just assumed business was poor.”
Chen said he now removes the QR code at the end of the day and only puts it back the next morning.
He also reminded business owners to stay vigilant so that they don’t waste time and effort trying to recover lost funds.
