Malaysia is known for its rich culture and friendly people, making it a place where there’s always something new to discover. As society changes, more people are exploring and embracing each other’s cultural traditions.
A recent TikTok video posted by @atansharibun showcased the beauty of Malaysia’s multiculturaism, where a Malay man hired a group of Urumi Melam (Indian drum) performers on his friend’s birthday.

M’sian man spends RM1K on Urumi Drum troupe to surprise friend
In the video, the OP named Atan was seen excitingly celebrating his friend Naim’s birthday while a group of Urumi Melam performers were seen playing the drums and singing ‘Happy Birthday’.
Despite the unorthodox method of celebrating one’s birthday, all of them were seen happily dancing and grooving to the music.

Speaking to WeirdKaya, Atan shared that he was keen on doing something unique for his friend’s birthday, which led him to the idea of incorporating Urumi Melam, a traditional Indian drum performance, into the celebration.
He added that he spent nearly RM1,000 on the performance but reiterated that it was worth the investment.
After all, we live in Malaysia, a place rich with diverse cultures. What better way to celebrate than by embracing and enjoying each other’s traditions?”

Netizens touched by the video
The clip has since garnered over 500,000 views at the time of writing and left netizens deeply moved by Atan’s way of celebrating Malaysia’s unique culture with the birthday surprise.
‘So happy bro. No one can destroy Malaysia’.

‘1 Malaysia.’

‘This is Malaysian.’
