When the boy heard his grandmother screaming for help, he quickly ran outside and sought help from neighbours.

Despite their best efforts to intervene, the neighbours were allegedly threatened by the suspect, leading them to contact the authorities.

“A 43-year-old man, acting aggressively, was detained upon the police’s arrival. Checks inside the house led to the discovery of a burnt body, believed to be the suspect’s 68-year-old mother,” said Salawati.

The body was then sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital’s Forensic Department for a post-mortem.

Suspect had an OKU card

While police investigations revealed the suspect tested negative for drugs and had no prior criminal record, he was found to have held a Persons with Disabilities (OKU) card, where he was diagnosed with a mental illness in Dec 2019.

Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah later issued a remand order for the suspect, where he begins his seven-day remand period today.
