After being together for 11 years and finding out that they are expecting a baby, a Malaysian man thought marriage would naturally be the next step for him and his girlfriend.
However, things did not go quite as planned.
According to the man, his pregnant girlfriend is now hesitant to register their marriage because he has yet to buy them a landed house.
Wanted to get married after finding out she was pregnant
Sharing his situation through XUAN’s platform on Facebook, the man said he and his girlfriend have been together for 11 years.
When they found out about her pregnancy this month, he immediately suggested that they keep the baby and get married.
His girlfriend did not reject the idea, but had one request before giving birth.
She wanted to take their wedding photos first as she was worried that her body might change after childbirth and she would regret not doing the photoshoot earlier.
The man agreed and brought her to China for their wedding photoshoot.
According to him, the wedding photos cost around RM15,100, while the entire 10 day trip brought the total expenses to approximately RM24,200.
GF says she does not feel secure without a house
After returning from the trip, the man began discussing marriage registration with his girlfriend.
However, she suddenly told him that she wanted to wait and observe their relationship for a little longer before registering.
Confused by her response, the man said he spent several days asking her what was wrong before she finally revealed the reason.
She reportedly told him that she did not feel secure because he had yet to buy a house for them.
According to him, his girlfriend wants to live in a landed house.
The man explained that it was not because he did not want to purchase a property.
He had been looking at houses for years, but properties in the areas he preferred were mostly priced above RM1.5 million.
His preferred budget is around RM1 million or lower, which made finding a suitable landed property difficult.
Takes home around RM12,000 a month
The man also shared that he earns around RM12,000 a month after EPF deductions.
He currently owns two cars, with one already fully paid off.
With a baby on the way, he now feels pressured to quickly find a suitable house so they can hopefully register their marriage before the child is born.
On top of that, he has already arranged a confinement centre for his girlfriend, which costs RM25,000.
He admitted that he did not realise confinement centres could be so expensive, but felt the money was worth spending to make sure his girlfriend could rest comfortably after giving birth.
Says he has always tried to provide for her
Looking back at everything that had happened within the month, the man said he had already arranged their wedding photoshoot, planned for her confinement and started preparing for their future as parents.
While the expenses had taken a toll on his wallet, he said he was willing to pay because he saw them as part of the responsibilities that came with starting a family.
He added that throughout their relationship, he had always tried to fulfil his girlfriend’s wishes whenever they were within his means.
This left him struggling to understand why not owning a house meant she still felt uncertain about their future together.
After 11 years as a couple and with a baby on the way, the man said he has never tried to avoid his responsibilities and has consistently planned for their future.
He is now asking for advice on how he can communicate with his girlfriend and hopefully convince her to register their marriage before the baby is born.
