Nasi lemak holds a special place in our hearts. Whether it’s for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even supper, it’s a meal that Malaysians can always rely on to satisfy their cravings.
But what happens when a “nasi lemak kosong” order turns out to be quite literally kosong?
The RM2 Nasi Lemak That Raised Eyebrows
Recently, a TikTok user, @nizambest1, shared a video that had Malaysians laughing and scratching their heads.
In the video, a man can be seen recording his friend, who is eating a packet of nasi lemak kosong priced at RM2.
However, instead of the usual sambal and a small slice of egg that most people associate with nasi lemak kosong, the packet contained nothing but plain white rice.
“What are you eating? Nasi lemak kosong?” the man asked his friend, laughing when he saw the contents—or rather, the lack of them.
Breaking Down the Costs
Curious netizens were quick to ask what the price would be if the usual accompaniments like sambal, anchovies, peanuts, and egg were included.
In response, the OP shared a follow-up video showing the price breakdown for each topping.
The video featured a fridge filled with food and beverages, with the nasi lemak kosong priced at RM2 per packet.
Additional toppings were individually priced as follows:
- Squid sambal: RM4
- Prawn sambal: RM5
- Chicken sambal: RM2
- Egg (with shell): RM2 each
- Fried anchovies and peanuts: RM1
Speaking exclusively to WeirdKaya, the OP shared more details and revealed that the incident took place at Ampang Park.
At first, he didn’t realise the nasi lemak was truly kosong. It was only after inspecting the packet that he discovered it contained nothing but rice.
His friend had bought it as a snack to enjoy during a work break, completely unaware that the meal would become a viral sensation.
Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time the TikTok user had shared a video about this nasi lemak.
He also said that he had uploaded a similar clip earlier, but it hadn’t gained attention.
Here is the second video:
Do you think RM2 for plain white rice labelled as “nasi lemak kosong” is reasonable, or should sambal and a small portion of egg be considered a given? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section below!
