Speaking to the Malay daily, Keningau district police chief Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai said the 28-year-old victim was out hunting at the orchard with a ‘bakakuk’ gun, a homemade gun which is easy to assemble and a popular firearm choice among Sabahans.

While walking down a hillside, the man slipped, causing the shotgun’s trigger to be disturbed, resulting in an explosion that struck his left hand and chest.

“He then lay in pain and tied his left arm to prevent further bleeding,” he said, adding that the accident caused the victim to lose four of his fingers and fracture his left rib.

Yampil added that the victim’s brother later went looking for him after seeing that he didn’t return home. When he was finally found, the victim was taken to the Nabawan Health Clinic for further treatment.

“Police also seized a ‘bakakuk’ gun along with a shotgun shell casing in the chamber. Investigations revealed that the gun was gifted to the victim from his grandmother two years ago to protect their orchard from wild boar attacks,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 for possessing a firearm without a valid license or permit.
