Losing your identification card (IC) is no doubt a troublesome thing as you need to file a police report and spend time applying for a new one. On top of that, you have to pay a fine for losing it too.
A man’s attempts to skip out on paying the fine after his IC went missing backfired massively after his claim of getting robbed was unraveled by police.
M’sian man lies about getting robbed to avoid paying fine for missing IC
According to a report by Harian Metro, the suspect was a 37-year-old man who went to file a police report about him getting robbed in the USJ 10/1 area in Subang Jaya on Wednesday (Dec 4).
In a statement by Subang Jaya district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat, he said the suspect claimed he was approached by a man at 6pm, who then snatched his wallet before fleeing on a motorcycle with his accomplice.
However, the suspect’s story quickly crumbled following preliminary investigations and interviews carried out by police.
It turned out that the robbery never took place and the complainant (also the suspect) had filed a false police report as he had lost his IC and did not want to pay the fine.
“The case is being investigated under Sections 182 and 395 of the Penal Code (Act 574), and investigation papers will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for instructions on charges against him,” he said.
The suspect faces six months in prison, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both if convicted.
How much does the fine cost?
If you’ve lost your IC for the first time, you’ll be required to pay a fine of RM100.
For the second time, the fine will be increased to RM300, and subsequent replacements will result in a penalty of RM1,000.
Should you discover that your IC has gone missing, head to the nearest police station immediately as letting your IC fall into the wrong hands can lead to identity theft and other unwanted consequences!
