A 40-year-old local man was shot in broad daylight at a restaurant in Taman Setia Indah, Johor Bahru, yesterday (Jan 8) before succumbing to his injuries.

Following the incident, clips of the man getting shot and the suspect fleeing the scene have since gone viral online.

According to a report by The Star, the victim was out for lunch with several friends at a restaurant on Jalan Setia 3/2 at about 11.30am.

CCTV footage later showed the victim using his phone outside the restaurant when he was approached by a man wearing a helmet.

Seconds later, the victim slumps to the ground while the man immediately flees the scene.

A workshop worker, who didn’t want to be identified, told The Star that he heard three consecutive explosion noises and saw a motorcycle leaving the scene.

“The next thing we saw was a man lying on the floor in front of the restaurant. I initially thought someone was playing with fireworks,” he said.

Johor Baru (South) police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said police were alerted of the incident after a resident made a call through the MERS 999 emergency hotline.

Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead by medical personnel from Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI).

Dashcam footage also showed the suspect, wearing a helmet, face mask, a blue top and black pants, taking to his heels after several gunshots were heard ringing in the air.

Police investigating

Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said police are currently probing the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder as well as determining the motive of what he described as a “gangland-style execution”, reported Malay Mail.

He assured the public that the shooting wasn’t related to terrorists threats or security risks, adding that it was an isolated case.
