In a bizarre incident, a Malaysian man, identified only as Mr. W, was detained by customs officials upon his return to Malaysia from Taiwan for carrying cookies shaped like male genitalia.
The peculiar event unfolded as Mr. W was pulled aside by customs while entering Malaysia, solely because of the unusual shape of the cookies he brought back as souvenirs.
Speaking to WeirdKaya, Mr. W explained that he had received similar genitalia-shaped cookies from a friend before and found them amusing during his trip to Taiwan. Deciding to share the humour, he purchased several boxes to gift to his friends back home.

However, his journey took an unexpected turn upon his arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Before exiting customs, Mr. W complied with a request to place his luggage through an X-ray scanner.
To his surprise, the customs officials focused intently on his luggage display and asked him to open his suitcase.
At first, I thought they were after the fever and cold medicines I brought from Taiwan for emergencies. But they were actually interested in my cookies, questioning if they were sex toys,” Mr. W recounted.
After explaining that the items were cookies from Taiwan and not toys, the officials informed him that he was being detained because the items resembled sex toys.

Mr. W argued that Malaysian law prohibits the importation of sex toys, not items that merely resemble them. Despite his argument, the officials insisted on confiscating the cookies.

They even asked me to unpack all the cookies from his suitcase one by one for a thorough inspection and explanation.”
The ordeal culminated in a visit to the customs office, where he was made to sign a seizure notice. Notably, the notice reiterated Malaysia’s ban on sex toys, not on items that mimic their appearance.

Exhausted from the dispute, I reluctantly let the officials confiscate the cookies, with the entire process taking about half an hour. My passport number was recorded”, adding to his frustration.
Feeling perplexed, regretful, and angry, Mr. W took to Instagram the same night to seek justice, sparking a wave of responses from netizens.
Some shared their own experiences of bringing similar items into the country, including actual sex toys, unlike Mr. W’s cookies.
“I’ve brought it in by putting in the checked-in luggage back then and nothing happened.”

“I brought it back too, three to four years ago.”

“When I was in college, I brought back a d*ck-shaped ashtray from Bali but wasn’t detained at all.”

This discrepancy, along with the fact that a friend had previously gifted him similar cookies without issue, highlighted a double standard that further confused Mr. W.
Mr. W expressed a desire for legal clarification on whether importing cookies shaped like sex toys constitutes a legal offence in Malaysia.
