Before booking a plane ticket, one must double or triple check that the time and date is correct before making payment as failing to do so can lead to unnecessary hassle and financial loss.
A young man whose sister missed her flight recently ranted on social media about how her fight ticket didn’t show the exact time she was supposed to board the plane and blamed the airline for using the 24-hour format.
M’sian man blames 24-Hour format for sister’s missed flight
Taking to Facebook to share the frustrating encounter on Monday (Apr 15), the man named Mohd Hisham Romel wrote that his sister was supposed to fly from Sandakan, Sabah, to KL.
However, he failed to notice that the flight was at 1.15am, and not 1.15pm. As a result, his sister missed her flight, resulting in a loss of around RM500.
Instead of acknowledging his oversight, Mohd Hisham pinned the blame on the airline, saying that the ticket never mentioned whether it was a morning or night flight.
The boarding pass never mentioned whether it was AM or PM (flight). It only stated 1.15 and not everyone knows whether it’s in the morning or nighttime.
Mohd Hisham also said that aside from his sister, several other passengers also missed their flight due to the 24-hour format used for the flight tickets and reminded others to be more aware of their flight times.
For the uninitiated, the 24-hour clock format is a form of timekeeping whereby the day runs from midnight to midnight and is divided into 24 hours.
It is indicated by the hours (and minutes) passed since midnight, from 00(:00) to 23(:59), with 24(:00) as an option to indicate the end of the day.
Netizens not quite sympathetic
Unfortunately for Mohd Hisham, netizens weren’t exactly sympathetic with his sister’s plight and instead laughed at his inability to understand the 24-hour format.
‘Unable to read the 24-hour clock system.’
‘This is the standard standard of procedure (SOP) internationally. Rarely is AM/PM used. Please educate yourself for future use. Airline SOPs are different from bus stops.’
‘The 24-hour system can be found in the Standard 4 Mathematics syllabus.’
So the next time you’re about to buy a plane ticket, please remember to check the time closely before making payment!
