In a recent incident that has stirred up controversy on social media, a man claimed to have faced discrimination when attempting to obtain a Pokemon angpau cover at a FamilyMart store, despite meeting the purchase requirements.
The incident, which unfolded in Lobak, Negeri Sembilan, was shared by the aggrieved individual in a post that has now garnered over 700k views on social media.
Man denied Pokemon angpau
The man, identified as @Qimi_Harun, detailed his experience of purchasing two items at a FamilyMart store, totalling RM30.20, making him eligible to receive the Pokemon angpau cover.
However, he alleges that the store workers informed him that the angpau could only be given to Chinese customers.
The post, accompanied by a photo of the receipt and the store, reads: “For the viral power of X netizens. I spent more than RM28 at Family Mart Lobak NS to get SE Pokemon Angpao but when asked, the cashier said ‘ONLY FOR CHINESE.’ Is it true that (the angpau) is ONLY FOR CHINESE????”
Apology attempt: Staff responds to backlash
This revelation left the man feeling uncomfortable, prompting a response from a netizen who claimed to be a staff member at the branch in question.
The netizen apologised for the incident and urged the complainant to contact him to receive the Pokemon angpau he should have received initially.
Rejection of apology
However, the man rejected the apology outright, responding with, “Sorry bro, damage has been done.”
As of the writing of this article, the man has also lodged a complaint with the head office of FamilyMart to seek a response and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
Netizens ain’t having it with him
In response to the viral post, netizens have expressed mixed opinions.
One commenter criticised the man, stating, “For god’s sake. I don’t get it. The party involved already apologised and responded to you. And yet you don’t want to accept their apology and you went ‘damage has been done’. Do you want the staff to be fired, and only then you will be satisfied? You are a grown man literally but your attitude is worse than kids.”
Another commenter suggested a more amicable resolution, stating, “You can settle this issue in a better way. But no, you want this to be viral. It isn’t a big deal, and the staff was misunderstood; he is probably new.”
A third commenter criticised the man’s reaction, saying, “You seem to be someone who is childish. The angpau doesn’t even have money in it. Havoc.”
