In a significant leap across continents, the 2023 Malaysian neo-noir drama “Abang Adik” is set to captivate Italian audiences with its nationwide release in cinemas on April 30th.
The exciting announcement about the film’s extended screening in Italy, along with the prospects of reaching more European countries, has generated considerable anticipation among cinema enthusiasts.
Directed by Jin Ong in his impressive directorial debut, the film dives deep into the lives of two undocumented orphans in Malaysia, bringing to light the struggles faced by those on the fringes of society.
Excellent box office performance
“Abang Adik” has earned widespread praise for its storytelling and performances, achieving notable box office success with RM5.2 million in Malaysia and RM14.5 million in Taiwan, underscoring its broad appeal and impactful narrative.
In its first ten days in Taiwan, “Abang Adik” set a record by earning NT$40 million (RM5.9 million), leading to more screenings and becoming the first Malaysian movie to top the country’s box office charts.
Additionally, in Hong Kong, the film broke records as the highest-grossing Malaysian movie in the region, with earnings of HK$2.5 million (RM1.6 million) in just two weeks.
Dream come true
The good news was shared via their official Instagram page, @abangadikthemovie, along with an Italian version poster and a quote in Italian: “In questo mondo crudele, almeno ho te,” which means “In this cruel world, at least I have you.”
The page also expressed their excitement about this breakthrough, saying that it is a dream come true.
