A Malaysian has urged the management of the Rawang R&R to address a possible privacy issue after a CCTV camera could be clearly seen from inside an accessible toilet.
Camera visible through gap above wall
In a viral Threads post, user @gemoi151 said he noticed the camera while helping his wife use the OKU toilet at the Rawang R&R northbound rest stop.
Photos shared by him showed a CCTV camera mounted outside the toilet area. However, it was clearly visible from inside because of an open gap above the toilet wall.
Its reflection could also be seen through a mirror inside the toilet.
Although the camera appeared to be facing another direction, the man said its visibility made him feel worried and uncomfortable.
“When I helped my wife enter the toilet, I automatically felt concerned and uneasy,” he wrote.
He added that the open upper section made the toilet’s privacy boundary feel compromised and urged the management to seal the gap.
Netizens question camera’s viewing angle
The post has since gained more than 433,000 views and 3,900 likes, with many netizens expressing similar concerns.
One commenter wrote:
“It’s simple. If we can see the CCTV, the CCTV can also see us.”
Several users also claimed that the camera appeared to be a pan, tilt and zoom model, which may allow its viewing angle to be adjusted remotely.
However, another commenter clarified that while such cameras can be moved and zoomed, it does not necessarily mean they provide a full 360 degree view at all times.
Still, many felt the camera’s location was enough to make toilet users uncomfortable, especially as the facility was meant for people with disabilities who may require assistance from another person.
PLUS Malaysia tagged
Several netizens tagged PLUS Malaysia and called for the matter to be investigated immediately.
They also questioned why the camera was installed near the toilet entrance and suggested that the upper gap be covered to give users greater privacy and peace of mind.
At the time of writing, no official response from PLUS Malaysia was shown in the shared posts.
