Police have confirmed they are investigating influencer and singer Haoren over a video showing him filming friends during the singing of the national anthem at an award ceremony.
If found guilty, he could face a fine of up to RM50,000, a jail term of up to one year, or both.
PKR Selayang Youth’s disciplinary and legal unit chief Tommy Tong, who lodged the police report, said Gombak police informed him at around 4.45 pm that a probe had been opened.

The case is being investigated under Section 8(2) of the National Anthem Act 1968 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Heavier penalties under communications law
Tommy explained to Sin Chew Daily that while the penalty under the National Anthem Act is only a RM100 fine or one month in jail, Section 233 carries much heavier consequences.
He said this could serve as a deterrent to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Haoren issues public apology
In a statement on social media, Haoren stressed that he had no intention to disrespect the national anthem.
He explained that it was his first time witnessing such a unifying moment at an award ceremony, with everyone singing ‘Negaraku’ together.
I took out my phone to record the moment to share my joy. My unintentional act caused public concern, and for that, I sincerely apologise,” he said.
Cooperating fully with authorities
Haoren said he has cooperated with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for their investigation.
He added that he will accept any punishment given and hopes not to waste further public resources.
I will treat every singing of the national anthem with greater respect from now on. I have always loved my country, and I thank everyone for their criticism, guidance, and understanding,” he added.
Incident drew public criticism
The incident occurred on August 8 during an entertainment awards ceremony.
Haoren, along with fellow Steady Gang members Ahya and Tomato (Lee Ming Hong), were seen filming while singing Negaraku, which netizens slammed as disrespectful.
Comments online accused them of “not respecting our national anthem” and “getting arrogant after becoming famous.”
