M’sian Influencer Stunned To Find Clothes Sold At Japan GU Store Was Actually Made In M’sia

"Why did I even have to fly to Tokyo to buy it?”
A TikTok video has recently sparked buzz among Malaysians after revealing that apparel from GU, the sister brand of Japanese clothing giant Uniqlo, carries the label “Made in Malaysia.”

The video, uploaded by user @uncle_jebat, shows his visit to a GU store in Japan during a trip.

‘Made in Malaysia?!’

To his surprise, one of the T-shirts he picked up not only had the GU tag but also a label stitched with “Made in Malaysia.”

I came all the way to Japan to shop at GU because people said the clothes here are cheap. Cheap, yes — but look at this, it’s made in Malaysia! Why did I even have to fly to Tokyo to buy it?” he quipped in the video while holding up the shirt.

He also expressed curiosity about the factory’s location, speculating whether it might be in Klang, Bukit Tinggi, or even Petaling Street, and said he hoped someone could tell him so he would know how much the shirt sells for back in Malaysia.

Reactions

The clip quickly gained traction, with many netizens chiming in. Some pointed out that although Uniqlo operates many outlets across Malaysia, GU — known for its trend-driven and affordable fashion — has yet to establish stores locally.

‘The problem is, GU doesn’t exist in Malaysia.’

‘The factory is in Batu Pahat. Back then, I was the one checking these clothes, bro. I worked there, but the clothes are indeed all shipped to Japan, not sold in Malaysia .’
