A local social media influencer has found herself on the wrong side of the law after she was charged with theft at the George Town Magistrates’ Court yesterday (June 13).
33-year-old Sarah Leo Ee May was charged under under Section 379 of the Penal Code before magistrate lnadratun Naim Mohd Saidi, reported the New Straits Times.

According to the charge sheet, Leo was accused of stealing an OPPO Reno8 5G handphone worth RM2,000 from her ex-boyfriend Andrew Yeap from a car at the parking lot of the Gleneagles Hospital at about 10pm on April 26.
If she’s found to be guilty, she faces up to seven years in jail, a fine, or both.
She was represented by Cheah Eng Soon while Deputy public prosecutor S. Preeya Darrsini represented the prosecution.
During the proceedings, S. Preeya urged the court to set bail at RM7,000. But Cheah objected and asked for a minimum amount, adding that it shouldn’t be punitive.
He also said that the incident was sparked by a misunderstanding between Leo and Yeap, of which the latter is the owner of an online business.
Bail was eventually set at RM3,000 with one surety and the case was set for mention on July 24.
Sarah Leo: I don’t understand the public attention
For her part, Leo has expressed surprise and bewilderment over the amount of attention given to the case.
Taking to a series of Instagram stories after the court proceedings, Leo said she was taken aback by the sight of reporters taking photos of her, adding that it was a relatively minor issue.

“My lawyer is handling all of my affairs. I am sorry that I have become the subject of public mockery. Thank you, everyone, but I will not respond.
“I’m not a celebrity or a singer. As such, there won’t be more updates here,” she wrote.
