At shopping malls, most shops would put up a sign prohibiting customers from bringing food or drinks into the premises. While some may find it troublesome, it’s actually there for a pretty good reason.
A customer learnt the purpose behind such signs the hard way after a cup of coffee was spilt all over several branded caps, forcing them to buy all of the affected caps.
M’sian forced to purchase 10 branded caps after spilling coffee on them
In a Facebook post which was originally shared by a netizen named AmiraHenna99 and later reshared by Penang Kini last Saturday (Feb 17), it showed the aftermath of the coffee-spilling incident at an undisclosed shopping mall.
In one of the pictures accompanying the post, it showed a cup of coffee with its contents spilt all across the floor, with some of it splattered across the display shelf and several caps.
To make matters worse, the caps weren’t the knockoff versions one can purchase at the wet market for less than RM10, but are baseball caps made by American lifestyle brand New Era.
For those unaware, this line of caps are known for representing famed Major League Baseball teams like the New York Yankees, LA Dodgers, and Boston Red Sox.
WeirdKaya did a quick check on the caps’ price on the New Era Cap Malaysia website and found that it ranges between RM119.50 and RM399.
According to the caption, the shopper said they had to purchase all of the caps which were stained by the coffee, with a photo showing at least 10 caps being stacked together.
Given the hefty price range, one can imagine how the final amount must have really hurt. RIP wallet.
‘Shop owner hit the jackpot’
In the comment section, netizens said that the incident was a financial jackpot for the shop owner and congratulated him for being able to sell so many caps one shot, albeit at the customer’s expense.
One netizen wasn’t sympathetic to the customer’s plight, where she slammed the latter for refusing to abide by the no food/drink rule.
Another tried to put a positive spin on the unfortunate incident, saying that the customer could wear different caps to match his/her OOTD (outfit of the day).
