M’sian fisherman admits to stealing durians, blames it on cravings
According to Harian Metro, the suspect was 46-year-old Roskhaizan Romli, who worked as a fisherman.
Based on the charge sheet, Romli was accused of stealing three durians worth RM200 from an orchard on Jalan Teluk Bahang belonging to Neoh Aik Eng on July 2.
Romli was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine, or both, if convicted.
He immediately pleaded guilty when it was read out to him before magistrate Chia Huey Ting.
Earlier, Romli was questioned why he stole the durians, to which he answered as a matter-of-factly:
I stole the durians because I wanted to eat them.
He also requested for a lighter sentence to be meted out, citing that he only earned RM1,000 a month as a fisherman.
Following his guilty plea, Huey Ting ordered Romli to pay RM200 in fines as well as ordering him to serve seven days in jail if he failed to pay the fine.
Fortunately, he kept himself out of jail by paying the fine on the spot.
