A family of three was shocked to find that the electricity bill for May skyrocketed from the previous monthly amount of around RM300 to an astonishing RM1738.60.
They were surprised as they only use one air conditioner at night. The family is reportedly from Tanjung Bungah.
The 31-year-old homeowner, Zhou (transliteration), who works as a clerk expressed her complaint to the media.
She mentioned that they moved into this second-hand double-storey terrace house about five months ago, and for the past few months, their electricity bills were around 300 ringgit. However, the bill for May exceeded a thousand ringgit.
According to Sin Chew Daily, Zhou said normally all the family members are outside of the house as both she and her brother work outside during the day, and her son only comes home from secondary school after 3 PM.
She shares a room with her son and only uses one air conditioner during the night. They also rarely use the television and her brother only occasionally uses an additional air conditioner when the weather is too hot.
I asked the previous owner, and the electricity bill for this house used to be only around 300 ringgit per month. I called the power company to complain, and they sent someone to inspect the meter, confirming that there was no problem. I also had someone check the air conditioner for any electrical leaks, but everything was fine.
Following a friend’s suggestion, she started recording the electricity consumption three times a day for consecutive days. She was puzzled and couldn’t figure it out as she found that the daily electricity cost was only a little over 10 ringgit.
So, where did the bill of over a thousand ringgit come from?
She decided to visit the Tanjung Bungah branch of TNB to raise the issue once again, hoping to find a solution.
Not An Exception
A number of netizens supported the owner as they encounter a similar circumstance.
“My house electricity bill has skyrocketed,” said one netizen.
“My house electricity bill has doubled too,” said one netizen.
One netizen even sarcastically said, “Let’s get ready to survive the nights with a campfire.”
Do you guys have an increase in the electricity bill?
