Most people visiting the United Kingdom for the first time would probably pack their coats, jeans and most comfortable walking shoes.
However, one Malaysian family decided to bring a familiar piece of home along by strolling through the UK in kain pelikat.
Casually walked around in kain pelikat
In a series of videos shared online, Mr Emir and his family were seen casually walking around the UK while wearing kain pelikat, a traditional checked sarong commonly worn by Malaysian men.
Rather than treating it as a one-off moment, he posted several videos showing his family confidently wearing the outfit at different locations in the UK.
In the caption of one of the videos, he revealed that it was his family’s first time visiting the country, making the experience even more memorable.

The family’s relaxed walk and unmistakably Malaysian attire quickly entertained netizens.
As of writing, one of the videos has garnered more than 1.6 million views, 314,500 likes, over 1,000 comments and 12,400 shares.
Parents travelled to watch him graduate
Speaking to WeirdKaya, Mr Emir explained that he is a student in the UK and that his parents had travelled there to watch him finally graduate.
He then thought it would be both funny and cool for the entire family to wear kain pelikat while exploring the country.
I’m just a student studying in the UK, and my parents came here to watch me finally graduate.
“So, I thought it would be a funny but cool thing to do to wear the kain pelikat over here with the whole family. We were just having fun, honestly,” Mr Emir told WeirdKaya.
Netizens join in with hilarious comments
The videos sparked plenty of jokes among Malaysian netizens, with many comparing the UK streets to familiar scenes back home.
Is there a new agreement or something?” a netizen asked.

Another netizen jokingly reminded him that they’re not in Malaysia.
“This is not Felda area bro”

“This is not Kedah, uncle”

Another netizen quipped: “We are the ones colonising the British now.”

“Does UK stand for University of Kelantan?” another joked.

What began as a fun family idea has since turned into a viral and wholesome moment, proving that Malaysians can bring a little piece of home wherever they go.
**Special thanks to Mr Emir for sharing his story.
