Buying a car is a major decision that can greatly affect one’s finances. As such, it’s important for one to count the cost before inking the purchase agreement.
Unfortunately for a Malaysian engineer, he let his family pressure him into buying a car his salary couldn’t maintain instead of ensuring he was financially stable to do so.
M’sian engineer with RM3.5K salary regrets buying Honda car
The man’s plight was shared in a Threads post, where he poured out his distress over his decision to buy a Honda car.

In the post, the man said he initially wanted to purchase a cheaper car such as the Perodua Bezza, but his family had other plans.
My family said an engineer shouldn’t be driving locally-made cars. My salary is RM3,500 and I thought I’d still have enough money to spare for other commitments after paying the RM1,000 monthly instalment.
“But ever since I started paying (the instalments), I’m now starting to feel the pinch. Service, road tax, bald tyres…it’s all on me now!” he exclaimed.

The man then asked whether he should sell the Honda off or downgrade to another car that suited his salary better.
“If I choose to keep the car, how do I manage my finances better? By the way, my salary is static. I thought I’d be getting a raise this year, but it never happened,” he lamented.
Netizens weigh in
In the comment thread, netizens offered their thoughts on the beleaguered engineer’s situation.
‘My husband, who’s the Engineering Head of Department, drives a Triton. This car is just to get him from Destination A to B. So there’s no need for an expensive car and just use an ordinary car.’

‘My first car was an Axia. After nine years, my pay increased and I had a bonus and allowance. It was only then I changed my car. I advise your first car to be one you can afford, not just for a year, but for several years.’

‘I wanted to buy a car and my dad told me to get a Honda. I told him to pay the monthly instalments as I couldn’t afford it. He later told me to get a Persona instead.’
