M’sian Earning RM8.5K Opts For Perodua Bezza, Netizens Say Cars Don’t Have To Be A Status Symbol

Bigger pay does not always mean bigger spending.
A Malaysian car salesperson’s post about a customer applying for a Perodua Bezza has sparked a discussion online, not because the customer could not afford a more expensive car, but because he appeared to choose practicality over status.

In the post, the salesperson shared that the customer’s was 30 years old, had a basic salary of RM8,500, and was applying for a loan to buy a Perodua Bezza 1.3 Advanced.

What stood out was the fact that despite earning a decent salary, the customer still went for a Bezza when he could have considered other car options.

“Impressive. High salary, but still chose Bezza,” the salesperson wrote, adding that with that kind of income, the customer could have picked other cars too.

Netizens: ‘Maybe he just knows what he needs’

Many commenters praised the choice and said it was a practical move.

Some pointed out that people should not assume someone buys a Bezza only because it is all they can afford.

One commenter said the Bezza could even be the customer’s tenth car, adding that people may buy a Bezza simply because it suits their needs.

Another netizen shared that they knew someone earning around RM17,000 gross salary who still drives a Myvi.

According to the commenter, the person works from home, usually only drives around town, and prefers taking flights for longer trips.

“Some people don’t need cars for validation,” the commenter wrote.

The discussion then turned into a mini sharing session, with many Malaysians saying they know people who earn well but still choose simple, easy-to-maintain cars.

One person said he earns RM5,700 but drives an Axia, adding that what matters more to him was being able to bring his wife and children on holidays every month.

Another commenter said they knew a couple who each earned close to RM10,000 monthly and lived in a house worth around RM1 million, but still drove an Axia.

According to the commenter, the couple only had one child and preferred a car that was small, simple, and convenient.

Another person also shared that they had once seen someone with a RM9,000 salary slip, but after deducting commitments, only had around RM1,000 left.

In that situation, the commenter said, even buying a motorcycle would be difficult.
