A Malaysian earning RM4,000 a month has turned to social media for advice after his parents opposed his decision to buy a Proton Saga, insisting that he should get a Toyota instead.
In a Threads post, the individual explained that he currently rides a motorcycle to work every day but hopes to purchase a car for emergencies and rainy days.
However, his parents’ strong preference for Toyota has left him feeling torn between making a practical financial decision and respecting their wishes.
Wants a Proton Saga to save money
According to the individual, he had already decided on a Proton Saga as he wanted something affordable that would allow him to save more money each month.
He explained that the car would mainly be used during emergencies or when the weather made riding a motorcycle inconvenient.
“Currently, my salary is RM4,000. I ride a motorcycle to work every day. I’m planning to get a car because it’ll be easier when it suddenly rains or if there’s an emergency,” he wrote.
He added that he had no intention of buying an expensive vehicle, as keeping his monthly commitments low was a priority.
However, his parents disagreed with his choice.

Already saving RM1,000 a month for the down payment
In a follow-up comment, the individual clarified that he was not expecting his parents to contribute financially towards the purchase.
In fact, he had been setting aside RM1,000 from his salary every month to save up for the down payment.
“Mind you, I’m paying for the down payment entirely by myself. Every month, I deduct RM1,000 from my salary for it,” he wrote.
He added that even after getting the car, he planned to continue commuting by motorcycle whenever the weather was good to save money.
Despite being financially responsible for the purchase, he admitted that going against his parents’ wishes made him uncomfortable.
He feared that buying the car without their approval might make him an unfilial child.
“I don’t feel good about getting it because I’m afraid it won’t be blessed since I didn’t listen to my parents,” he shared.
He then asked netizens for advice, hoping to avoid making the wrong decision.
One commenter suggested that he could quietly submit his car loan documents and only inform his parents after receiving the vehicle.
“Just submit the documents quietly. Once you get the car, drive it home. Eventually, they’ll stop talking about it, although they might bring it up occasionally,” the commenter wrote.
Meanwhile, another netizen offered a cheekier solution to the disagreement.
“Just tell your father, ‘If you want a Toyota, give me your documents and I’ll apply for a loan under your name.’
While many netizens encouraged him to stick to his budget, the individual appeared hesitant to proceed without his parents’ approval.
