Last night (May 9), a couple’s desperate bid to escape the police ended tragically when their car crashed into the Paya Lebar river.
Reportedly, a Malaysian couple, fearing apprehension for ‘khalwat’ (close proximity) by police, hastily drove their car, which eventually plunged into the river.

Fear of ‘Khalwat’
According to the New Straits Times, Alor Gajah police chief Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah recounted the incident, detailing that the ordeal commenced at 9.30 pm yesterday.
This incident unfolded when the 30-year-old male driver, upon spotting a police mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) while driving through the forest reserve area, hastily initiated the escape.
As the car approached Paya Lebar, it swerved off the road and plunged into the river.
After the crash, the driver ran away, leaving behind a 26-year-old female passenger who was found in the car with no injuries from the incident.
“There was a 26-year-old woman in the car, but the victim did not suffer any injuries,” Ashari stated.
When patrol officers arrived, they checked the vehicle but didn’t find anything illegal. Following the incident, Ashari disclosed that patrol officers promptly escorted the woman to her relative’s residence in the nearby Telok Gong area.
“We’ve identified the suspect, and investigations indicate that the man fled out of apprehension regarding potential police detention due to being alone with his girlfriend in the car,” he elaborated.
He further revealed that subsequent checks uncovered the man’s three previous criminal records related to drug offenses.
