Suraus are considered to be hallowed ground for those of the Islamic faith as it’s a place where they offer prayers to God.
However, one couple in Johor decided to desecrate it with a shocking act of indecency by stripping each other down, ultimately resulting in them getting jailed for months.
M’sian couple strip each other naked at Johor surau
According to NST, the couple, 25-year-old Lok Kah Hui and 26-year-old Yap Win Yin, pleaded guilty to the charge of nudity at the Batu Pahat Magistrate Court yesterday (Nov 13).
They were accused of stripping each other naked at the men’s surau near the Yong Peng Toll Plaza at 8.15am on Nov 8.
Kah Hui, a durian orchard keeper, and Win Yin, a pet food shop worker, were charged under Section 377D of the Penal Code, which is punishable Section 34 of the same Code with a jail term for up to two years if convicted.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip, while both the accused were represented Tan Song Yan and Kamarul Arifin Nordin from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).
Both jailed for up to 6 months
The prosecution requested the court to mete out an appropriate sentence for the duo by taking into account the severity of their offense.
Although the two accused plead guilty and save court costs, it does not mean that the plea can automatically lighten the sentence against them.
“The court needs to take into account the public interest for the act of the accused which is extreme obscenity and the punishment needs to be done as a lesson to other individuals,” argued Farah Wahidah.
After taking into account the duo’s guilty plea, as well as arguments presented by the prosecution and defense, Magistrate Suhaila Shafi’uddin sentenced Kah Hui to six months in prison while Win Yin received five months.
She also ordered that their imprisonment begin from the date of their arrest on Nov 8.
