A Malaysian woman took to Threads to reveal how her in-laws’ attitude towards her family completely changed after she and her husband were blessed with a child following five years of marriage.
According to mStar, before they had kids, her husband loved and pampered his nieces and nephews without hesitation — spending money on toys, food, and trips without expecting anything in return.
“For five years when we didn’t have kids, my husband showered his sister’s children with so much love. They were the only nieces and nephews around, so he took them on trips, bought them clothes and toys — never once asking their mother for anything,” she wrote.
Everything changed after they had a child
But things took a different turn after the couple finally had a child of their own.
She claimed her in-laws began treating her son differently compared to the other kids in the family.
When my husband spent on their kids, nobody said a thing. But now that we have our own child, he’s treated like an outsider,” she shared.
She described how the in-laws would take their own kids out for meals without including hers — even buying toys and snacks for their kids while hiding them when her son was around.
“My husband could spend on three kids before, but now they can’t even treat my one child once in a while. It’s heartbreaking,” she added.
Depression & family fallout
Things worsened when her husband, who once had a good income, fell into depression and faced financial hardship.
Believing his family would support them during tough times, he moved the family closer to his mother’s house. Instead, he was left deeply disappointed.
He thought living near them would help. Instead, he felt abandoned,” she wrote.
At one point, her husband even told her that if anything happened to him, he didn’t want his family to be involved — a reflection of how betrayed he felt.
Living with regret
Now, the couple lives under immense stress in a rural area near his family, far from the city and essential facilities. She recounted how even their pet cat died because there was no nearby veterinary clinic.
“My own family, who live far away, check on us more often than his family who live nearby.
“Sometimes it feels like we don’t have any family here at all. I regret moving. We can’t move back yet because of the house deposit and all the expenses,” she added.
