M’sian Couple Regrets Taking RM40K Loan For Dream Wedding, Now Struggles To Afford Food While Paying Off Debt

Dream wedding for a day, instant noodles and debt for years.
A Malaysian couple reportedly took out a RM40,000 loan to pay for their dream wedding, only to regret the decision two months later.

While their wedding looked perfect in photos and received plenty of praise from guests, the couple soon found themselves struggling to afford food as most of their income went towards repaying the debt.

Took RM40,000 loan for wedding expenses

According to the husband, the RM40,000 debt was not used to purchase a house or cover other long term necessities.

As reported by mStar, the money was spent on their wedding celebration.

I got married with RM40,000 in debt. It was not a housing loan, but debt from the wedding.

The couple reportedly spent heavily on expensive floral decorations, beautiful gift trays and a wedding dais that resembled a palace.

Guests praised the celebration, while the photos made the wedding appear perfect on Instagram.

Ate instant noodles

However, the excitement did not last long.

Two months after the wedding, the couple found themselves sitting in their kitchen and eating instant noodles because most of their money had been used to pay the loan instalments.

The husband said they did not eat instant noodles because they did not know how to cook. Instead, they could barely afford to spend money on food after paying off their monthly commitments.

“We took out the loan simply because we wanted to meet the standards set by other people’s weddings,” he added.

Wife wished they had chosen a simple wedding

The husband also recalled something his wife told him during their financial struggles.

She said that had they known they would end up in such a difficult situation, they would have chosen to hold a simple wedding and use the remaining money to travel together.

“And she was right. The wedding lasted for just one day, but the debt will take years to repay,” he said.
