M’sian Couple Fined RM11,000 For Keeping ‘Babi Bodoh’ Meat Without A Permit

A married couple was fined RM11,000 each by the Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to possessing ‘Babi Bodoh’ (bearded pig) meat and two protected birds without a permit.

The case was heard at the Seremban Sessions Court on Tuesday (Aug. 27), where Judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam handed down the sentence after both accused, Chau Thim Choy, 53, and Ng Sui Ping, 52, pleaded guilty.

If they fail to pay the fine, they will each face two months in jail.

What they were caught with

According to the charges, the couple was found in possession of parts of a Bearded Pig (Sus barbatus) — also known locally as Babi Bodoh — as well as two Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots (Loriculus galgulus).

Both the animal and bird species are fully protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716), with the Bearded Pig listed in the Second Schedule and the Hanging Parrot in the First Schedule.

As reported by Kosmo, the offence took place at about 3.55pm on Aug. 20, 2020, at a premise in Pekan Broga, Mantin.

The couple was charged under Section 68(1) and Section 60(1)(a) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 for keeping the protected species without a special permit or license.

Both offences are punishable under the same Act.
