A Malaysian college student recently shared on Reddit how he’s been quietly struggling with judgment and mockery, all because he’s still using an Android phone.
In his post, he explained that he’s had the same phone for the past four years, and while it’s still functional, it has become a source of ridicule among his peers.
Yesterday someone belittled me for still using an Android in college.”
“I’m even afraid to take out my phone”
Since starting college, he said he’s felt a constant sense of being looked down upon, especially because so many of his classmates are using iPhones.
Everyone is constantly flashing their iPhones and I’m still an Android user. I’m even afraid to take out my phone in some cases where the crowd is packed.”
The pressure isn’t just social. It has become personal and isolating.
At one point, he was even publicly embarrassed for trying to record a stage performance.
I even got called out one time for having terrible camera quality.”
“Feels like I’m being treated differently”
For him, the experience isn’t just about phones. It feels like a class divide.
Feels like I’m being treated differently for the type of phone I’m using. Like they think they’re better than me and their status is higher or richer than me because they’re using Apple products.”
He also mentioned that with bantuan money expected soon, he anticipates most of his classmates will be upgrading to newer Apple devices, leaving him as the only Android user in his class.
Despite the pressure, he doesn’t intend to follow the crowd.
I honestly don’t want to use the money to get another phone as I have other responsibilities. Feels like a waste just to be liked.”
At the end of the day, a functioning phone is still a phone, and no one should have to spend just to fit in.
