In this day and age, the question of how big of a salary one must have in order to survive in cities like KL has been a debatable topic for a long time.
A Malaysian recently stirred up discussion online after claiming that earning RM13,000 per month isn’t sufficient for one to get by in KL, a figure most would assume would allow one to live very comfortably.

‘Earning RM13K will still make one broke’
In a photo posted to the Facebook group Malaysia Education Info (And Homeschooling too), it featured a screenshot of a breakdown of the OP’s daily and monthly commitments.
Here’s is the list:
- Monthly income: RM13,250
- Income after tax & EPF: RM10,000
- Mortgage: RM5,300 (for a house worth RM1mil)
- SUV: RM1,500 (for a car worth RM130,000)
- Kids: RM1,200
- Others: RM2,000
After all those expenses, the OP’s left with absolutely no savings, leading them to make the following comment:
If you earn RM13K, this is the reality of the cost of living in KL. Many people earning RM13K are still broke.”
Reactions
If the OP was hoping to garner some form of understanding and sympathy from netizens, it was anything but that based on the comment section.
Many slammed the OP for not learning to live within their means, only to gripe and complain when their wallet gets hit due to poor financial choices.

Only one netizen seemed to sympathise with the OP, where she shared how her husband earns RM16,500 monthly but don’t have any savings.
However, she admitted that this was due to her husband’s lack of financial planning.
