For Malaysians, meals like economy rice or nasi campur are not only essential, but also affordable options when their funds run dry towards the end of the month.
A netizen recently sparked a debate over his take on the level of healthiness between Japanese set meals and nasi campur, where he claimed the former was much better than the latter.
M’sian claims Japanese set meal’s healthier than nasi campur
In a Threads post, the OP began with a plea to those “making RM10k+ month/worth over a million” to stop consuming nasi campur or economy rice twice a week just to save money.

He argued that those who believed they were saving money by eating economy rice or nasi campur were actually on their way to pay more in the future when their health fails them.
The OP then offered what he said was much healthier option: a Japanese set meal which one can get from most restaurants, where it comes with fruits, salmon, miso soup, a small plate of salad, rice, and cawanmushi (steamed egg custard).
“A meal below costs RM25-30 and everyone can eat it (not pork, not beef). It is balanced, high in protein, have Omega 3, veggies etc.,” he wrote.

He added that while he personally had nothing against economy rice or nasi campur, he said his post’s aim was to encourage those with higher spending power to spend it on healthier options.
“If you would pick ‘healthier’ dishes in nasi campur in the future, my job is done,” he said.
Netizens strongly disagree
Unfortunately for the OP, his opinion left a bitter taste in most netizens’ mouth, with many taking issue with his belief that paying more for one’s meal meant that it was a healthier option.

Some also took aim at the OP’s poor choice of meal in trying to argue that it was healthier than nasi campur, with one saying he’d rather eat economy rice than spend money on “expensive nonsense”.
