A wedding was reportedly cancelled on the day itself after the groom allegedly failed to provide RM13,000 in “duit hantaran”.
“Duit hantaran” refers to a customary sum of money given by the groom’s family to the bride’s family as part of Malay wedding traditions.
It is separate from “mas kahwin”, which is a compulsory marriage gift given directly to the bride.
Family travelled in a convoy of six cars
According to mStar, the incident was shared online by a woman who heard about it from her friend.
She claimed that the groom was due to be married on Friday, but the ceremony was cancelled after he allegedly failed to provide the agreed RM13,000.
A friend told me that her brother had caused a major problem for the family. He was supposed to get married on Friday, but it was cancelled because he did not bring the RM13,000.”
The reason the money was unavailable remains unclear.
“I don’t know whether the money went missing or what happened,” she added.
By then, the groom’s family was reportedly already travelling from the southern region to the East Coast in a convoy of six cars.
They had also rented a homestay near the village of the woman he was supposed to marry.
Family allegedly scrambled to raise RM13,000
The bride’s family reportedly decided not to proceed with the ceremony and lodged a police report over the matter.
The groom was also allegedly taken to a police station.
According to the woman, his siblings scrambled to borrow money from others and raise the full RM13,000 within a day.
“The police did not want to release him until the money was paid. His siblings struggled to ask around for loans to raise RM13,000 in one day.
“Imagine receiving a call at 2am from someone asking to borrow money to resolve the issue,” she said.
However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged police action were not independently confirmeddetailed in the report.
Bride’s family reportedly suffered losses
The groom’s younger sibling was reportedly disappointed with his actions but could not travel with the family to the East Coast due to work commitments.
Meanwhile, the bride’s family was said to have suffered financial losses as the venue, dais and catering had already been booked.
It remains unclear how long the couple had known each other or been engaged before the ceremony was cancelled.
